Coveo is a hosted commercial relevance platform, strongest for customer-facing search and for search inside applications like Salesforce and SAP. Lucidworks Fusion is built on Apache Solr and is strongest for ecommerce product discovery and for teams that want to control and customize the stack themselves. Neither publishes a price: Coveo sells in usage units where, in its own words, "Each pricing unit includes 100k queries per month", and Lucidworks publishes no figures at all. If the job is employees getting one cited answer across Slack, Drive, Notion, Confluence, Jira and Gmail, both are heavier than that job needs, which is the gap InSearch is built for.

Neither was designed around the question most companies actually have internally, which is an employee asking something in plain language whose answer is spread across a Slack thread, a Drive doc and a Jira ticket. If that is your problem, you are comparing two platforms for a job that a connected product does more directly and for far less setup.

One more thing worth saying up front, because it shapes every part of the evaluation: neither vendor publishes a price you can read. Coveo's pricing page describes the model but shows no dollar figures. Lucidworks' pricing page returns an error to automated requests entirely, which we re-checked on August 10, 2026. Any comparison article that quotes you a confident monthly number for either one is quoting something the vendor did not publish, and you should treat it accordingly.

The row that decides most evaluations is the last one. Coveo and Lucidworks both assume somebody inside your company owns search as a discipline. That is a reasonable assumption when search is part of what you sell, and an expensive one when it is not.

What is the difference between Coveo and Lucidworks?

Coveo is a hosted commercial platform where the relevance engine and the machine learning are the vendor's, and you consume them as a service. Lucidworks Fusion is a platform built on Apache Solr that you deploy and operate, usually on Kubernetes, where the openness is the point and the configuration is yours. Coveo optimizes for time to a good result; Lucidworks optimizes for control over how the result is produced.

That difference shows up in who you hire. A Coveo deployment typically needs application engineers to build the search experience and someone to work with the vendor on relevance tuning. A Fusion deployment usually needs at least one person who genuinely understands Solr, because Fusion inherits Solr's schema, sharding and query behavior, and the pipeline configuration exposes it rather than hiding it. Teams that have that person tend to be happy. Teams that assumed the platform would supply it tend not to be.

The commercial posture differs too. Coveo is publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange, so its financials are a matter of record, and it was named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Search and Product Discovery. Lucidworks is private and independent, ships on a fast release cadence (Fusion 5.18.0 became generally available on July 7, 2026), and is not currently in the same Leaders quadrant. Neither of those facts should decide a purchase on its own, but they do tell you what kind of vendor relationship you are entering.

For search inside a product, a support portal or a commerce site, Coveo is usually the faster path, because the relevance models, the analytics and the connectors into Salesforce, ServiceNow and SAP arrive built. For ecommerce product discovery with unusual catalog logic, or for any deployment where you need to see and change how ranking works, Lucidworks Fusion gives you more room. Neither is clearly better; they are tuned for different owners.

The framing that helps most buyers is to ask what happens the day after go-live. With Coveo, the ongoing work is tuning relevance against real query logs and keeping the integration current, largely inside the vendor's toolkit. With Fusion, the ongoing work includes that plus running the stack: Solr, Spark, ZooKeeper, Kubernetes, upgrades and connector maintenance. Lucidworks is transparent that the platform is meant to be operated, and it prices by records indexed rather than by seats, which suits catalogs and large document corpora far better than it suits headcount.

Neither one, though, is the natural answer to "our employees cannot find things across Slack, Drive and Confluence." That question is about connecting many SaaS systems and honoring each one's permissions per person, which is a product problem rather than a platform problem. It is worth being explicit that we sell into exactly that gap, so weigh the recommendation accordingly, but the structural point stands independently of who is making it.

Coveo vs Elasticsearch: what are you actually choosing between?

Coveo versus Elasticsearch is not really a product comparison, it is a build-or-buy decision. Elasticsearch is a search engine you assemble an application around: you own the cluster, the schema, the ingestion, the security model and the relevance work. Coveo is a managed platform that arrives with connectors, relevance models, analytics and a support contract, and charges you for removing that work.

The reason so many teams search for this comparison is that an Elasticsearch cluster already exists somewhere in the company, usually for logs, and someone asks why it cannot serve as enterprise search. It can, technically, and the first demo will look convincing. The costs land later: permission filtering per user across multiple sources, keeping connectors alive as SaaS APIs change, relevance that does not degrade as the corpus grows, and someone on call for the cluster. The comparison that matters is not license price against zero, it is the total of the license against the fully loaded cost of the engineers who would otherwise build and maintain the same capability.

A reasonable rule: if search is a differentiating part of your product and you have the engineering depth to own it, open source is a defensible choice. If search is internal plumbing that simply has to work, paying a vendor is almost always cheaper than paying salaries, and paying for a finished product is cheaper again than paying for a platform you still have to build on.

Coveo vs Solr: how does that compare to Lucidworks?

Coveo versus Solr is the same build-or-buy question as Elasticsearch, with one wrinkle: Lucidworks Fusion sits directly on Solr, so comparing Coveo to Solr often really means comparing Coveo to Fusion. Fusion is, in effect, the commercially supported way to run Solr with pipelines, connectors, a UI and machine learning layered on top.

If you are choosing between raw Solr and Fusion, you are deciding how much of that layer you want to write yourself. If you are choosing between Coveo and Solr, you are deciding whether the search experience is something your team builds or something you buy finished. Fusion is the middle option, and it is a genuine one, which is why Lucidworks keeps showing up next to Coveo on shortlists despite the two companies having very different shapes.

The Solr lineage has a practical consequence right now. Lucidworks released a Solr Pro connector on April 15, 2026, which replaces the deprecated Solr V1 connector, and all V1 connectors are deprecated in Fusion 5.18.0 and, in the documentation's own words, "will be removed in Fusion 6". Anyone on Fusion has a migration in front of them regardless, which is a natural moment to ask whether the platform is still the right shape for the job.

How much does Coveo cost?

Coveo does not publish dollar figures. Its pricing page, checked on August 10, 2026, describes the model without pricing it: usage-based subscription units where "Each pricing unit includes 100k queries per month", with entitlement-based pricing for Service and Websites and seat-based plans for Workplace. For Commerce, a unit covers "100k queries and recommendations per month, with a set 100k catalog items". Everything past that structure requires a conversation with sales.

Two things follow. First, your bill scales with query volume rather than with headcount, which behaves very differently from a per-seat product as adoption grows: a successful rollout raises your cost in a way a seat-based contract does not. Second, articles that quote precise Coveo monthly prices are not sourcing them from coveo.com. We have seen confident figures circulating for entry and professional tiers, and they do not appear anywhere on the vendor's pricing page. Ask Coveo directly and get the unit definition in writing.

How much does Lucidworks cost?

Lucidworks publishes nothing. The pricing page returns an HTTP 403 to automated requests, which we confirmed again on August 10, 2026, so there is no figure to quote and no tier structure to describe. What is known is the unit: Fusion is priced by records indexed rather than per seat, and the license agreement carries a minimum overage surcharge of 25 percent if you exceed the contracted volume.

That unit is the thing to negotiate. Records-indexed pricing is generous when your corpus is stable and punishing when it grows unpredictably, and connecting one chatty system can move you into an overage band quickly. If you are evaluating Fusion, model your index growth over the contract term before you agree to a record ceiling, and get the overage terms in the contract rather than in a slide.

Do Coveo or Lucidworks search Slack, Notion and Google Drive?

Partly, and this is where internal search evaluations usually stall. Lucidworks Fusion ships roughly 54 connectors, weighted toward enterprise content management and commerce systems, and Notion, Gmail and Microsoft Teams are absent from that list. Coveo's connector library is oriented around the systems its customers embed search into, which means excellent coverage of Salesforce, ServiceNow, SharePoint and similar, and it can reach collaboration tools through its Workplace product.

The deeper issue is not connector count, it is what happens to permissions once content from a dozen systems sits in one index. Every source has its own access model, and the honest question to put to any vendor is whether a revoked permission takes effect at the next sync or at the next query. Enforcing at query time is the safer answer and the harder one to build. It is what we do, and it is worth asking both platforms to describe theirs precisely rather than accepting "we respect source permissions" as an answer.

What are the best Coveo alternatives?

It depends which Coveo you mean. If you want commercial-grade search inside a commerce or support experience, the realistic alternatives are Lucidworks Fusion, Algolia for site and product search, or building on Elasticsearch or OpenSearch with your own team. If what you actually want is employees getting cited answers across the company's SaaS tools, the alternatives are cross-app search products rather than relevance platforms, and the comparison set changes completely.

Nobody outside the sales process can answer that, because neither vendor publishes figures. What is public is the unit each one charges in. Coveo sells usage units that include 100,000 queries per month, so cost tracks adoption. Lucidworks charges by records indexed with a minimum 25 percent overage surcharge, so cost tracks corpus size. Model both against your own growth before comparing quotes.
Fusion is a commercial product built on open-source foundations, principally Apache Solr, with Spark and ZooKeeper, deployed on Kubernetes. You get the transparency and control of the Solr lineage, but Fusion itself is licensed software, not a free download. The practical benefit is that the underlying engine is one your engineers can inspect and reason about.
It can, for search experiences, but they are different classes of thing. Elasticsearch is an engine you build on; Coveo is a managed platform with connectors, relevance models and analytics included. Companies usually keep Elasticsearch for logs and observability and buy a platform for the search experience, rather than choosing one for both jobs.
