The short answer
On an annual plan, ChatGPT Business costs the same as ChatGPT Plus: $20 per person per month. On monthly billing Business costs $25, so $5 more than Plus. For that price a team gets a workspace the company owns, an admin console, SAML SSO, company knowledge from connected apps, the Extra High and Pro thinking levels Plus does not include, and no training on business data by default. For two or more people using ChatGPT for work, Business is the better buy. For one person, Plus is the only option of the two, because Business starts at two seats.
Prices and plan features read from openai.com/business/chatgpt-pricing and chatgpt.com/pricing (US) on October 12, 2026. Thinking levels from OpenAI's help center article on GPT-6 and other models, read the same day.
Most small companies do not decide to adopt ChatGPT. It arrives one expense report at a time. A designer puts Plus on a company card, then a salesperson, then the founder, and six months later finance finds eight separate $20 charges and asks whether there is a team plan. There is, and the question that follows is whether moving everyone to it costs more.
The honest answer is that it usually costs nothing extra, sometimes $5 a head more, and the reasons to move are not about price at all. Here is the arithmetic, then what actually changes.
What a small team pays on Plus and on Business
At any team size, annual ChatGPT Business costs exactly what the same number of Plus subscriptions costs: $240 per person per year. Monthly Business costs $300 per person per year, $60 more than Plus. Plus has no annual plan, so the comparison that matters is annual Business against monthly Plus, and those come out even.
| Team size | Plus, $20 monthly each | Business, annual ($20) | Business, monthly ($25) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person | $240 a year | Not available (2 seat minimum) | Not available |
| 3 people | $720 | $720 | $900 |
| 10 people | $2,400 | $2,400 | $3,000 |
| 25 people | $6,000 | $6,000 | $7,500 |
Two caveats on the table. Premium seats in Business cost $100 a month annually ($125 monthly) and are optional, so leave them out of the first comparison. And the annual plan is a commitment: if the team shrinks mid term, you have paid for the seats. A team that is still unsure how many people will use ChatGPT can start monthly at $25 and switch once usage settles. The full seat price breakdown, including Premium and the 200 seat ceiling, is on our ChatGPT Business pricing page.
ChatGPT Business vs Plus, which is better for a team?
Business is better for any team of two or more, because the work, the accounts and the data settings belong to the company instead of to each employee. The model access is at least as good, and on reasoning it is better. The price is the same on annual billing. What you give up is the freedom of each person managing their own subscription, which for a company is usually the problem rather than the feature.
OpenAI's own plan pages draw the line plainly: Go, Free and Plus "are designed to be used by individuals," and Business and Enterprise "are for businesses." The feature table follows from that. Against Plus, a Business seat adds:
- A dedicated workspace with an admin console, bulk member management and admin roles. Plus has none of these.
- SAML SSO, MFA and domain verification, so people sign in with the company identity provider.
- Company knowledge, which lets ChatGPT answer from connected apps like Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365. OpenAI's comparison marks it as not included in Plus.
- Workspace agents, and plugins you can share with the whole workspace. Plus has neither.
- No training on business data by default, SOC 2 Type 2, centralized billing, usage analytics and spend controls.
ChatGPT Business vs Plus usage limits
Business includes every thinking level in ChatGPT, including Extra High and Pro. Plus includes Medium and High but not Extra High or Pro. That is from OpenAI's help article on GPT-6, which lists Business alongside Pro and Enterprise as having all levels, and Plus as having two of them. GPT-6 Pro is available in chat on Pro, Business and Enterprise plans; Plus includes GPT-6 Astra, the model that powers it, only inside ChatGPT Work and Codex.
For everyday questions, both plans are listed as unlimited subject to abuse guardrails, and heavier tools have their own allowances. OpenAI sells the Premium Business seat with "5x more usage than standard, with no 5-hour limit," which tells you the Standard seat has a 5 hour window. In practice most of a small team will never notice the difference between a Plus account and a Standard Business seat. The one or two people who hit limits every afternoon are the candidates for Premium, and in a Business workspace you can give them that seat without changing anyone else's.
ChatGPT Business vs Plus vs Pro
Pro is a personal plan that starts at $100 a month, with three usage tiers. It is for one heavy user, not a team. OpenAI's help center refers to Pro at $100 and Pro at $200, so the old single $200 figure many comparison posts still quote is no longer the whole story.
For a company, the useful comparison is a Pro subscription against a Premium Business seat. Both cost $100 a month on the right billing term. The Premium seat sits inside your workspace, under your admin console and your data defaults, and counts toward the same team as everyone else. The Pro subscription belongs to the person who bought it. If you are paying for it, the Premium seat is the one you control.
What happens to the work when someone leaves
On Plus, the account belongs to the person who opened it, so their chats, projects and uploaded files leave with them. On Business, the workspace belongs to the company and an admin removes access from the console.
This is the argument that tends to settle it for finance and IT, more than any feature. Eight personal Plus accounts means eight places company documents were uploaded, with eight different training settings, none of which the company can see or switch off. Plus does offer a training opt-out, but it is a toggle each person controls. Business turns training off for the whole workspace by default and puts the setting with an administrator.
If you are formalizing AI use at the same time as moving people onto a team plan, it can help to know where each department actually stands before you buy seats for everyone; a digital maturity assessment across your teams gives you that baseline in a form leadership can act on.
When Plus is still the right buy
Plus is the right choice for a solo founder, a freelancer, or one person testing ChatGPT before the company commits. Business has a two seat minimum, so a company of one cannot buy it. Plus also makes sense for someone whose use is personal and occasional, where an admin console adds nothing.
The second case is a company that needs fewer than two people on ChatGPT and has no sensitive data going into it. That is rarer than it sounds. Once a second person starts pasting customer emails, contracts or financials into a personal account, the training default and the ownership question both start to matter.
Neither plan searches the company
Neither Plus nor Business is a company search engine. Business adds company knowledge, but it answers from the apps each member has connected, so two people asking the same question can get different coverage. OpenAI's connector documentation describes each person authenticating each provider individually; we walk through what that means for rollout in ChatGPT connectors and what they cost.
That is fine for drafting and analysis, which is what most teams buy ChatGPT for. It is a weak fit for the other question that comes up every day: where did we already write this down? The pricing exception agreed in a Slack thread, the latest version of the onboarding doc, the Jira ticket that explains why a feature works the way it does. That needs an index of the company's apps, connected once by an admin, that answers with citations and respects who can see what.
InSearch does that job. It connects Google Drive, SharePoint, Gmail, Slack, Notion, Confluence, Jira and Salesforce read-only, answers in plain English with a link to every source, and filters results by each person's existing access in the source app. It costs $20, $32 or $49 per user per month billed annually, starts at three seats and is bought by card on our pricing page. Teams commonly run both: ChatGPT Business for writing and analysis, InSearch for finding what the company already knows.
Which one should a small team buy?
Buy ChatGPT Business on annual billing once two or more people use ChatGPT for work. It costs the same as Plus, and the company owns the workspace, the data settings and the offboarding. Start monthly at $25 if headcount is uncertain, add Premium only for the people who hit limits, and price Enterprise early if you expect to pass 200 people, because Business stops there; the numbers at that ceiling are in ChatGPT Business vs Enterprise cost at the 200 seat cap.
If you are comparing assistants rather than plans, the same $20 seat is on offer from Anthropic, covered on Claude Team pricing, and from Microsoft for companies already on Microsoft 365, covered on Microsoft 365 Copilot Business pricing.
