Box AI Units and Box AI Pricing by Plan in 2026

Box AI comes with paid Box plans, but only Enterprise Plus at $50 a user answers across several files and searches with AI. AI Units meter the rest, do not roll over, and stop working at the limit.

The short answer

Box AI has no price of its own. It comes with paid Box plans, and what you get depends on the plan: Business ($15 per user a month billed annually) and Business Plus ($25) answer questions about one file at a time and include no AI Units, Enterprise ($35) includes 1,000 AI Units a month, and only Enterprise Plus ($50) and Enterprise Advanced (quote only) add multi-file questions, AI search and Box AI for Hubs. AI Units meter the paid AI features, do not roll over, and when they run out those features stop until next month. There is no automatic overage bill.

USD prices from the June 16, 2026 capture of box.com/pricing in the Internet Archive (the live page shows the same plans in euros to our servers), Box support articles on AI Units read October 8, 2026, and earlier archive captures from June 2024 onward.

If you are pricing Box AI, you are usually in one of two meetings. Either your company already pays for Box and someone wants to know whether the AI is included or an upgrade, or you are comparing Box AI with an assistant that answers questions across all the company's tools. Both questions come down to the same three things: which plan you are on, how many AI Units it includes, and what Box AI can actually see.

We sell InSearch, a search tool that answers questions across company apps, so Box AI is adjacent to what we do. Below is every Box AI figure we could verify, where it came from, and where Box is simply the better choice.

How much does Box AI cost?

Box AI is included in every paid business plan from Business upward, and the price you pay is the Box seat price. What changes between plans is how much AI you get: single-file questions on Business, Business Plus and Enterprise, and multi-file questions, AI-powered search, Box Agent and Q&A over Hubs only on Enterprise Plus and Enterprise Advanced.

Enterprise AdvancedQuoteQuote20,000 a monthAll of the above, Box Agent Pro Mode, custom agents, extract agents in the web app

Every business plan has a three user minimum. Box notes that the annual prices are reduced by 25% and rounded, and that they are valid for new customers only. The USD figures have been identical in every capture we checked from mid-2024 to June 2026, and the euro prices on the live page in October 2026 follow the same structure, so a change since June is unlikely but not ruled out. Enterprise Advanced has no public US price. The only figure we found is a UK government framework rate, which is not a commercial list price and we do not repeat it as one.

What are Box AI Units and what do they cost?

AI Units are how Box meters its paid AI features. Box's support article says each AI interaction, "from querying content to extracting metadata", is counted in units, and the number used depends on the action and on whether you pick a Standard or Premium model. They are bought as a monthly volume inside an annual subscription, the allowance resets at the start of each calendar month, and "unused AI Units do not roll over."

The price of extra units is the one figure on the page that has been reworded several times:

  • March 2025: "$10 minimum 1,000 units, purchased annually".
  • May 2025: "$10 minimum 10,000 units, purchased annually".
  • August 2025 to January 2026: "$10 per 1,000 AI units / month minimum 10,000 units, purchased annually".
  • June 2026: "$10 min. purchase 1,000 AI Units/month; annual commitment".

The 2025 wording is clear: $10 per 1,000 units, with a 10,000 unit minimum. The 2026 wording no longer says what the $10 buys, so we do not convert it into a per-unit price. If AI Units are part of your budget, ask your Box account manager to put the price per 1,000 units and the minimum in the order form. Extra units are bought through sales, not in the admin console.

What uses AI Units, and what is free?

The features that burn units are the API and agent ones: the Q&A and text generation APIs, every Extract Agent, Box Agent in Expanded Mode and any agent run inside a Box Automate workflow. Box Agent in standard mode, Box search, Shield auto-classification and registered MCP partner apps have daily limits but no unit charge.

Box's own documents disagree on one point, and it matters for budgeting. The AI Units FAQ says units "are consumed when you use Box AI UI elements, not only the API," while the October 2025 rollout note says there were "no UI changes" for Box AI on documents, notes and Hubs, and the pricing table marks single-file Q&A as included on Business plans. Our reading is that everyday questions on a document in the web app do not draw down a small allowance, but heavy use of agents and extraction does. Confirm it against Box's consumption table for your account before you rely on it.

When the allowance runs out, Box does not bill overage. "Paid AI features are blocked until the entitlement resets or you purchase additional units." Admins get a warning banner as usage nears the limit and an email when it hits. That is safer for the budget than an open meter, and less pleasant for the team whose extraction workflow stops on the 20th.

Extraction is where units go fastest. If your Box folders hold contracts, invoices or leases and the goal is to pull fields out of them, price that job separately; for commercial real estate teams, dedicated AI lease abstraction software is often a cleaner buy than metering Box's extract agents across thousands of leases.

How has Box AI pricing changed?

Box has moved from capped queries, to unlimited queries on Enterprise Plus, to a unit meter for APIs and agents, while seat prices have stayed put.

What does Box AI cost for a 50 person team?

For 50 people billed annually, Box costs $15,000 a year on Business Plus and $30,000 a year on Enterprise Plus. That $15,000 gap is the real price of Box AI that can answer across several files and search with AI, because the cheaper plans only answer questions about one file at a time.

The arithmetic is simple because Box prices per seat: 50 seats at $25 is $1,250 a month, and 50 seats at $50 is $2,500 a month. Enterprise sits between them at $1,750 a month and adds 1,000 AI Units and Hubs portals, but not Q&A over Hubs. If your team mainly opens a contract and asks what the renewal terms are, Business Plus covers it. If people need to ask a question across a folder of documents, you are looking at Enterprise Plus.

What Box AI cannot see

Box AI answers from content stored in Box. Multi-file questions take up to 10 files at a time, Hub answers come only from that Hub, and a question about anything outside it gets a reply that Box AI cannot answer. Box also limits each question to 1,000 characters and reads up to 4 MB of text per file in Hubs.

Box's answer to the rest of your stack is to go the other way: its MCP server lets ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini Enterprise, Glean, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio and Perplexity read Box content. Calls through registered partner apps are not charged, but Box warns that Q&A, Extract and Doc Gen invoked through MCP stay on standard pricing, and that connectors which copy and index content make bulk API calls that can push a company past its API limits. If you plan to point Glean or Microsoft 365 Copilot at Box, check your plan's monthly API allowance first: 50,000 calls on Business and Business Plus, 100,000 on Enterprise and Enterprise Plus.

Is Box AI worth it, or do you need company-wide search?

Box AI is worth it when the answers your team needs live in Box. If they are spread across Slack threads, Confluence pages, Google Drive, Notion and Jira as well, a Box upgrade does not reach them, and a cross-app search tool is the better spend.

Be honest about where your knowledge sits. Legal, finance and real estate teams that keep their working documents in Box get real value from Enterprise Plus: multi-file questions, Hub assistants built on curated content, and Box's governance around all of it. No outside tool will beat Box on content that never leaves Box. The same pattern shows up with Dropbox Dash pricing: storage vendors build AI that is excellent inside their own walls.

Most companies' answers are not in one place, though. The decision is in Slack, the spec is in Confluence, the customer history is in Salesforce. That is the job InSearch does. It connects Google Drive, Slack, Notion, Confluence, Gmail, Jira and Salesforce read-only, answers in plain English with citations to the source, and checks every answer against what the person asking can open. It costs $20, $32 or $49 per user per month billed annually, from three seats, bought by card. For the same 50 people, the Team plan is $1,000 a month. If that is the problem you are pricing, start with search across all your company apps, or ask a question in the box at the top of this page.
